Esoteric - The Maniacal Vale

The Maniacal Vale is a slow brooding beast of an album.  Two discs of snails with guitars.  Dig it! and prepare…

BLSARSWAA Regional Series, #1 - Oakland

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

BLSARSWAA OaklandThis week Brendan Landis’ Super Awesome Radio Show Wins Again, Awesome will begin a series of region-themed shows, focusing on experimental and avant-gardde music from different areas around the world.

Week One: OAKLAND! (And the surrounding Bay Area.) This is an area that already receives a lot of love from us, so we figure it’s a nice way to kick things off. We here at BLSARSWAA love the music of this area for its gritty, colorful spasms of prog, free-improv, and laptop noise. We hope you will too.

(A few artists you will hear include Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Idiot Flesh, Matmos, Kid 606, Dj Q-Bert, Negativland, Bobby Joe Ebola & the Children MacNuggits, and The Flying Luttenbachers.)

BLSARSWAA #13 - Cambodian Music

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

BLSARSWAA 13 - Cambodian MusicThis week on BLSARSWAA, you’ll hear 100% traditional Cambodian music. Left field, you say? Maybe so!

Still, I encourage you to sit back and enjoy a couple hours of this stuff - it’s gorgeous, and I can pretty much guarantee you won’t be hearing this much Khmer music on any other radio station.

Brendan Landis’ Super Awesome Radio Show Wins Again, Awesome airs every Friday from 4pm - 6pm EST.

B-bam!

The Triumphant Return of BLSARSWAA

Friday, July 20th, 2007

BLSARSWAA 12 - Pop MusicBrendan Landis’ Super Awesome Radio Show Wins Again, Awesome returns from summer hiatus with a one-one-punch of pop music - a wonderful compliment to the often-romanticized heat waves and lack of routine associated with this time of year. Booyeah!

The BLSARSWAA guarantee: No songs over five minutes in length.

That’s right! For one day only, you won’t be able to hear any dense, electronic compositions or stuffy, instrumental numbers if you try! How inanely awesome is that?

So drop your attention span like it’s hot and tune your hi-fi to thebirn.com - today from 4-6pm EST.

(A few examples of artists you’ll hear include Brazilian Girls, Brian Eno, Cornelius, Junior Senior, M.I.A., Deerhoof, et al.)

BLSARSWAA #11 - No-Input

Friday, June 15th, 2007

BLSARSWAA 11 - No-InputToday’s episode of Brendan Landis’ Super Awesome Radio Show Wins Again, Awesome will be showcasing the works of Toshimaru Nakamura and Sachiko M, two prominent artists in the “onkyo” scene in Tokyo. Nakamura makes music by playing a mixing board with no input, and Ms. M plays a sampler with no samples.

This music can be difficult to listen to at first - not only does it employ a language completely outside of rhythm and tonalism, but it is at times physically stressful to listen to. While it may be quiet and sparse enough to be characterized as ambient music, I believe it is most enjoyable when the listener’s full attention is paid to it. No-Input music can be distracting if you’re trying to work while you listen.

I will be playing solo and duet works of these two, plus some of their collaborations with artists like Otomo Yoshihide, Christian Fennesz, Ami Yoshida, and Keith Rowe.

BLSARSWAA airs every Friday from 4PM - 6PM EST on BIRN 1.
